THE SCHOOL PLAY & OTHER EVENTS

The School Plays

Every other year we stage a play at the end of either the Spring or the Summer term. This event is an integral part of being at our school. The children are involved in the whole process of putting on a play. They assist in writing, staging, producing and acting the play. The comprehensive, educational value of this whole process cannot be underestimated. The children are not just learning lines when they put on a play; they are also learning key organisational, communicative and self-awareness skills.

Our production of Pinocchio in the Summer of 2004 was a remarkable event. Not only did the children remember all their lines but they also delivered their words with a depth of feeling and awareness that was quite extraordinary for their age – the play was mainly enacted by 7 to 9 year olds.

Rumplestiltskin

&

The Three Little Pigs

In 2006 the Primary Class performed two plays that they helped to adapt from two classic fairy tales, Rumpelstiltskin and The Three Little Pigs. In both plays we projected images onto a screen above the stage as well as playing a running music soundtrack with sound effects. Both plays were a huge success with outstanding performances from every single one of the children.

Last year the school put on its most ambitious production so far - in fact too ambitious for our humble school building - The Wizard of Odd, a modern adaptation of the classic tale The Wizard of Oz, set in Grimsby. Performed at the Vernon Theatre in Lyndhurst, the Wizard of Odd involved a cast of thousands (well about 30 children aged from 2 to 14 - it felt like a cast of thousands), a music score, songs (just the one), dancing (very silly dancing to Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste!), clips from movies and TV, plus filmed dream sequences and a filmed spoof on Big Brother called 'Pull the Chain', the show where you get to flush contestants and their self-esteem down the loo! The play was our best yet, with once again quite remarkable performances from all concerned.

Other Events

We try to do as many school outings as possible. Each year we go on a Mushroom Walk/ Autumn Leaves Walk, a Bluebell Walk and a Summer Leavers Walk. We also visit local sites of natural and historical interest and local cottage industries. All these trips are open to the whole school and parents are especially welcome to join us – and often needed to help us with adult to child ratios.

We have three seasonal celebrations at the end of each term, which include the Winter Candle Procession at Christmas, the Spring Egg Hunt and Games and the Summer Sports Day and Celebration.
